Rent Freeze Bronx Press Event and Day of Action
On August 10, 2016, the New York City Department of Finance and the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, in conjunction with Council Member Ritchie Torres, will hold a press event and Day of Action at the Bronx Library, 301 East Kingsbridge Road. The event is part of their continuing effort to inform and enroll seniors and people with disabilities of the Rent Freeze Programs also known as SCRIE and DRIE. The scheduled 12:30 PM press event will be followed by canvassing by DOF and CAU staff, along with local community groups, who will distribute flyers and information about upcoming enrollment events. SCRIE and DRIE are New York City rent increase exemption programs, providing valuable financial assistance to eligible seniors 62 years and older and people with disabilities, 18 and over, who are receiving SSI or SSDI. Renters must live in rent-stabilized, rent-controlled or Mitchell-Lama buildings and their combined total household income must be $50000 or less and their rent must be at least 1/3 of their monthly income. The Bronx has been identified as an under served area, where many eligible renters have never applied for the program. During the month of August the Department of Finance and its partners in this project will actively engage the community to help fill out forms, dispel myths and increase enrollment.
